On May 11, 2001, the late and great Douglas Adams passed away and in his honor, national towel day was born as a way to demonstrate appreciation for the books, the author, and how pop culture was changed forever because of his book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
For many, Adams' description of a towel as being crucial to successfully hitchhiking through the galaxy was so funny that it became iconic and a part of pop culture. In Adams' book, a towel is the most important thing a hitchhiker can have and it is important to know where your towel is because it means you are in control of your own life. In addition, a towel can be converted into a variety of things that are way too silly which is exactly why we appreciate the book.
Now when May 25th comes around, we observe National Towel Day as a way to pay our respects to Douglas Adams.
In order to observe National Towel Day, you carry a towel throughout the day, just like in the book and movies. Some people are bigger fans than most and will spend plenty of time explaining why Vogon poetry is the worst, or how the beginning of the universe really just made a lot of people mad. We encourage you to engage on whatever level you'd like to and at the very least, carry our towel around with you all day!
If people ask why you're carrying a towel, here's a great excerpt from Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
We'd love to see photographs of you with an Everplush towel because when it comes to traversing the galaxy, a towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.
